L’Alliance New York’s Bastille Day celebration welcomes a range of exciting immersive performances and entertainment!
12pm-5pm — Les visages de la Francophonie
The world-wide network of Alliances Françaises are participating in Inside Out, a global art project created by artist JR that empowers communities to share a message through public art installations.
From 12pm to 5pm, New Yorkers can have their photo taken in the “Inside Out” photo truck and paste their self-portrait posters on Madison Ave participating in a city-block long mural that will be on display all day.
For this global action, entitled Faces of the French-Speaking World (Les visages de la Francophonie), participating Alliances will capture the portraits of people in different cities and countries to highlight the diversity of the French speaking world. Each Alliance Française will create their own unique community installation, and together, will create a giant mosaic that celebrates the people who make up our global, multicultural community.
12:30pm — Blank Placard Dance, Replay
This Bastille Day, L’Alliance New York presents a timely reenactment of the 1967 performance of Blank Placard Dance, replay by French choreographer Anne Collod. Originally created by Anna Halprin in response to the Vietnam war and social unrest in the U.S., Anne Collod remounts this seminal work for 30 amateur dancers carrying blank signs accompanied by a marching band heading uptown. Following the original dance’s protocol, Bastille Day audiences are invited to participate by proposing statements for the blank placards: What would YOU like written on these signs? Exploring the place of performance in urban settings, this participatory project demonstrates the enduring power of art across generations at the crossroads of happenings, dance, and activist art.
The performance will start at 12:30pm on the corner of Madison Avenue and 60th Street. The performance will then follow a path through the neighborhood and will end on the corner of Madison Avenue and 60th Street.
12pm-5pm — DJ Julien
Immerse yourself in the rhythmic beats of DJ Julien, whose dynamic selection of new music will infuse the atmosphere with sunny vibes as you explore the French-themed booths lining Madison Ave.
